I really wish I could stop writing about this but apparently Canadians seemed determined to prove to me that they are just as racist as Americans. The topic du jour? Anchor babies!
Of course the article itself is really not the problem, it simply discusses the case of an individual, who is pregnant and happens to be due in September. Her lawyer is trying to expedite her case so she can be out of detention by the time her child is due.
Cue the mob and ignorance.
“The lawyers are whiners..what’s wrong with having the baby in prison?”
I mean really? What the problem with lacking proper medical care when giving birth? If something should go wrong, hey, one less “fake” refugee.
Of course chances are this woman will be able to give birth in a delivery ward. The real concern is most likely transit and keeping her cuffed to the bed while she gives birth. Not to mention the continued lack of prenatal care and the fact that a cell is not exactly conducive to raising a child
“A poll in today’s Globe indicates 76-percent of respondents think the Tamils are scamming Canada. They’re not legitimate refugees.”
Because public opinion is as good as law in this country, oh wait…
“We should immediately deport her and her “husband” as well as the other preggos because of health issues.”
Ah, I get it! So we can call them liars and question the legitimacy of the child as well. Classy!
“The pregnant ones are the worst of the lot. Purposely hoping to have their babies in Canada so their kid becomes an instant Canadian – what a disgusting, greedy, bunch…..send all these line hoppers back now!”
“Great an anchor baby! Terrorist or not the mother will now be allowed to stsy and will end up being a further drain on our health care system, not to mention our welfare system!”
And the basis for this is? Even if a child is Canadian, parents who are here will still be sent back if they have an illegitimate claim. The entire concept of an “anchor baby” is complete fiction drummed up to incite the ignorant among us into a foaming frenzy.
“Take her in a boat outside our 12 mile waters or whatever it is and let the child be born in international waters.”
So she will have no medical care and the child will be stateless. These keep getting classier and classier.
“This is making a mockery of our laws, our country and of Canadians.”
Actually this is EXACTLY how our laws are supposed to work. A claim was made, the courts will now decide if it was legitimate. This is not complicated. It may take some time but this is to ensure the fairness and equity of the system.
“Canada should changethe law that grants automatic citizenship to anyone born on Canadian soil. In the US there’s pressure to do exactly the same thing by changing the 14th Amendment.”
Translation: A bunch of racist teabaggers also want to keep the “anchor babies” out by dismantling the American Constitution. Sounds like a great idea!
Actually it’s a horrible idea, and if you actually follow this to it’s logical conclusion, generations of Canadians would need to be deported because they have done nothing but been “born on Canadian soil” in order to earn their Canadian citizenship. I’m sure this poster has a real great story on why they would be exempt from this. I’m sure their grandfather came four generations ago with $30 in his pocket and built something of themselves blah, blah, blah. Of course most of these people ‘immigrated’ by showing up unannounced, giving their name and sauntering on in.
“It is a privilege to have Canadian Citizenship, not a given — to those that recieve or are given it ,”worship it” ,-as it can be taken away just the same”
Hey, I love being a Canadian citizen and I think anyone who is Canadian should feel lucky, but the truth is having a citizenship to a country is a human right. Just another reason why the suggestion that we should not rely on jus soli or birthright citizenship is ridiculous.
“So this whole politically-correct refugee thing still somehow manages to discriminate against men?”
Making sure pregnant women get adequate medical care is discriminatory against men? Only in the patriarchy.
“These people are no more refugees than you and I. To add insult to injury, these folks had fun, spelled s-e-x on the way over (sounds like a holiday cruise, ferCristssake!), then have their babies here so we can raise them, watch them become marginalized, then turn into home-grown terrorists.”
OH MY GOD! They had sex! Sorry… they had s-e-x!
See refugees are not allowed to have sex. That would suggest that they are human… or something like that. There should be no activities, not even a game of cards. Also no fun, no laughing, and certainly no smiling. If you want make a refugee claim there must be a minimum of three months sobbing with considerable moping.
“Maybe it is just me. But are these not the most pulchritudinally challenged women on the planet?”
And if you have nothing intelligent to say, pander to your lower misogynist and just insult the way women look.
Remember these are serious policy concerns, not racism. And I’m actually from Pluto. Good night folks!

Sadly, your Canadian citizenship has just been rescinded due to your having claimed extraterrestrial origin. You will be required to return to Pluto within the next three months; since there is not now a spacecraft that can support human life between Earth and Pluto, you will be required to design and pay for it yourself in the next 90 days.
Thank you for your stay,
Take your damn anchor babies with you.
Sincerely,
Immigration Canada (a division of the Harper Government, Inc.) & the Racist Society of Terrified Failures
I knew I shouldn’t have admitted that… but what can I say, I get carried away when I blog. Does anyone have a Costco membership? It’s a long trip back to Pluto and I have to stock up on supplies.
